The Confucius Institute and Weihai International today handed over scholarships worth 24 million to 15 Makerere University students pursuing a Bachelor of Chinese and Asian Studies. This scholarship is as a result of the agreement signed in 2019 by the Vice Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe and the Director Weihai to offer such support as long as the company operates in Uganda. The beneficiaries of this year’s scholarship are the 2020/2021 first-year students who are financially challenged but academically strong.  This function was presided over by the Principal College of Humanities and Social Sciences who appreciated Mr. Li for the kind gesture. She challenged the students to use this golden opportunity to keep in school and work hard at their studies. The Ugandan Director, Dr. Gilbert Gumoshabe thanked the Director Weihai for promising and fulfilling because many people promise and later do nothing. He further remarked that it was not easy to start a new programme and get students attracted to it. This has been possible because of the generous support from such companies like Weihai International. The students used the occasion to exhibit their skills in the Chinese language so far learnt by delivering their votes of thanks in the same language to the amazement of Mr. Li and the Principal. The main interpreter of the day was Bukenya Gordon (Li Wei) a second-year student who benefitted from the same scholarship in 2019.
